Animal experiments

I am totally committed to working towards a total ban on the use of all animals in experiments. I am also in constant contact with NAVS, BUAV and other animal welfare organisations, to try to put pressure on the government on this issue.

The Lib Dem party also firmly believes that alternatives to animal tests should be actively encouraged. Scientific techniques have progressed greatly and tests can now be conducted on cell and tissue cultures. Computer modelling can help predict the effects of many substances without the need to subject animals to these harmful tests. There are also human "guinea pigs" and new medicines are already tested on healthy human volunteers, and it may be that some animal experiments may be avoided by moving to human trials earlier in the regulatory process.

I also believe that a permanent Animal Protection Commission should be established, answerable to Parliament through a Cabinet Minister. This would help to co-ordinate and upgrade the issue of animal welfare.
