Norman Baker's work in Parliament
Since first being elected to Parliament in 1997, Norman has worked tirelessly for his constituents, regularly raising local issues and thus bringing them to national attention. In the past year, Norman has participated in a variety of adjournment debates on local issues, including:
- The Ringmer fireworks depot explosion
- Healthcare services in Sussex
- Farming in rural Sussex
Along with speaking in the House, Norman is also involved in a variety of Parliamentary groups, such as:
- The Associate Parliamentary Group on Flood Prevention (Chair)
- All Party Parliamentary Environment Group (Chair)
- The All Party Parliamentary Group on Tibet (Vice-Chair)
- The Associate Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare
Norman has also been heavily involved in trying to make Parliament more transparent and accountable. Indeed, he even fought the House authorities for two years in order to make them release a detailed breakdown of MPs expenses. Furthermore, when a Private Member’s Bill was put before Parliament with the aim of exempting MPs from their own freedom of information legislation, Norman was at the forefront of those who argued against it and successfully blocked it.
