A House of Commons motion tabled by Lewes MP and Liberal Democrat Animal Welfare Spokesman Norman Baker has won support from across the political parties for an inquiry into marmoset experiments conducted at Cambridge University.
The motion follows an investigation by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) into suffering caused to marmosets in experiments at Cambridge. It calls for:
Norman Baker has consistently put pressure on the Government to end all cosmetic and unnecessary testing on animals. The Liberal Democrats call for a permanent Animal Protection Commission to be established answerable to Parliament through a Cabinet Minister.
Speaking about the new motion Mr Baker says:
"The BUAV investigation suggests there is a worryingly blasé attitude towards animal suffering at one of Britain's top academic establishments. I urge MPs to support this motion which will twist the Government's arm into revealing what exactly happened to these marmosets. This will be an important step on the road to stopping avoidable suffering in animal experiments."
