Local MP and Lib Dem Shadow Environment Secretary Norman Baker has stepped up his campaign to protect the Sussex environment in the face of plans to expand Gatwick airport, by signing a cross-party House of Commons motion with 30 other MPs.
Mr Baker's chief concern is that the government is "caving in" to the airline industry despite alarming new evidence that carbon emissions from aviation have doubled since 1990. The Lib Dem MP has signed the Commons motion to underline the threat that increased Gatwick air traffic will have on Sussex.
The motion calls on the government to:
Plans to develop the airstrip at Redhill in Surrey will add to the number of flights at Gatwick. Mr Baker calls for the recommendations contained in the motion to be implemented in full to remove the threat to the Sussex environment.
Speaking about the motion, Norman Baker says:
"The aviation industry is churning out more and more carbon dioxide. By allowing the Redhill plan to go ahead, the government will be giving a green light to the aviation industry to pollute the Sussex environment."
"The Commons motion signed by MPs from across the political parties sets out a sensible package of measures designed to halt the rampant growth of the aviation industry. If implemented, the proposals will safeguard the Sussex environment and slow the growth in pollution generated by the aviation industry."
