A tough Commons motion calling on the government to introduce Lib Dem plans for kerbside recycling for every home has been tabled by local MP Norman Baker with the support of 39 of his colleagues. Mr Baker wants recycling to replace landfill and incinerators like the one planned by East Sussex County Council for Newhaven.
Mr Baker's motion puts pressure on Ministers to implement kerbside recycling schemes like the one operated by Lewes District Council nationwide by the time of next election. This would transform Britain's standing as one of the worst recyclers in Europe into one of the best.
Norman Baker supports the Lib Dem plan to ditch landfill and incineration in favour of kerbside recycling as the most environmentally effective way of dealing with waste. Similar plans have been put forward north of the border by the Scottish Labour Party, which wants universal kerbside recycling by 2010.
Speaking about his motion, Norman Baker says:
"The government needs to rethink its 'burn it or bury it' approach to managing waste. This is affecting my constituents who are facing up to the prospect of an incinerator in Newhaven thanks to East Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove Council.
I urge the government to immediately adopt Lib Dem plans to introduce kerbside recycling for all houses by the end of this Parliament and help clean up Britain. We need to move away from a reliance on incineration and landfill to recycling and use of sustainable resources."
A copy of the motion is reproduced below:
That this House supports the Liberal Democrat manifesto promise of kerbside recycling to every home by the end of this parliament; notes that this would move the United Kingdom from being one of the worst to one of the best recyclers in Europe; further notes that such schemes would ensure a more sustainable use of resources and less pressure for deeply unpopular landfill and incineration; and strongly urges the Government to take heed of the Scottish Labour Party manifesto commitment to provide kerbside recycling to every home by 2010 by promising such schemes are also made universally available in England and Wales by the same date.
