Local MP welcomes A27 decision from Transport Secretary

Local MP Norman Baker has welcomed the decisions on the A27 today. The Lewes MP told Transport Secretary Alistair Darling on the floor of the Commons that he had made a "good decision" on refusing the proposed A27 scheme between Southerham and Beddingham.

The Secretary of State confirmed in answer to a question from Mr Baker that he recognised the area around Beddingham was a very sensitive part of the South Downs landscape, and whilst there was a need to build a bridge over the level crossing, he agreed with the Lewes MP that a dual carriageway should be ruled out. The Transport Secretary also refused the go-ahead for the suggested bypasses at Wilmington and Selmeston on environmental grounds.

Norman Baker said:

"This is a considered and measured decision by the Transport Secretary and is in line with 95% of what I was asking for. The present position at the level crossing at Beddingham is unsustainable and I can understand why he has concluded the bridge is necessary. Equally this area is one of the most delightful in the South Downs and building a dual carriageway would have been an environmental disaster. While the decision to reject the bypasses at Wilmington and Selmeston is the right one, there is a need for online safety improvements, particularly to eliminate the bend at Selmeston."
