2003 (and previous) press releases
Local MP Norman Baker has warmly welcomed a commitment from Lottery-funded Sport England to back the proposal for a skate park in Lewes. Mr Baker has campaigned for money to be made available to fund the scheme and has over the years met representatives of young people in the town and written a number of letters to take matters forward.
In a letter to the Lib Dem MP, Sport England Chief Executive Roger Draper revealed that Sport England would support the scheme "as far as possible". It is now down to the South East regional Sport England office to decide whether to allocate Lottery money to the proposal.
The Skate Park scheme is backed by the Lib Dem MP and Lewes District Council, who have also pledged money towards the facility.
Speaking about the support from Sport England, Norman Baker says:
"The Skate Park will provide much needed recreation facilities for young people in the area. I welcome the commitment from Sport England to support the scheme and hope funds can be made available to develop the site as soon as possible. I shall continue to drum up support for the skate park and, with the continued help of Lewes District Council, hope that it can become a reality very soon."
