Seaford's MP mourns loss of Homefield Cottages

The loss of Homefield Cottages is a blow to the town, and a further example of asset-stripping by the County Council, says the town's MP Norman Baker.

The council is today (Tuesday) due to rubber-stamp the closure decision, which comes hot on the heels of the sale by the council of Corsica Hall, now it seems likely to be converted into housing.

Norman Baker says: "I appreciate that the County has concluded that the present arrangements are not cost-effective, and they have carried out an assessment of alternative provision before finalising the closure. I have however been contacted by a number of local residents, most recently in my mobile summer surgery in Alfriston last week, who feel that this closure robs the town of the only publicly accountable social services unit of its sort. There is also concern at the effect this may have on carers, given the anticipated reduction in respite care facilities.

"Whilst I believe that the council is acting in good faith, I also believe that they are being driven by money, and that outweighs any downsides. There is also a suspicion amongst many that the County is simply asset-stripping, given its recent track record in both Seaford and Lewes."
