2003 (and previous) press releases
Local MP Norman Baker has called for the blanket introduction of a 50 mph limit along the C7, the back road from Lewes to Newhaven.
His call follows the release of information to him by the County Council, revealing that there were 30 accidents involving injury along the road in the three year period up to 31st May 2003.
Norman Baker says: "The analysis from the council shows that the incidents were spread out along the road, with no particular blackspot. Such spots have been largely eliminated by previous council action. This suggests that speed might well be a large part of the problem, and I think a 50 mph limit, in tandem with the other measures in place, could help to reduce the accident rate still further, as well as reminding drivers that the recommended route between Lewes and Newhaven is actually via the A26.
"The good news is that the accident rate, at the equivalent of 32 per 100 million vehicle kilometres, is actually two-thirds of the national rate of 48 for a road of this nature. That shows that the work the County has put in over the years has had a positive effect, but the continuing accident rate shows that there is more to be done."
The County Council has confirmed to the MP that investigation of a 50 mph limit along the road has been included in a list of sites to be reviewed.
