MP wants action to tackle vehicle vandalism in Alfriston

Alfriston's MP Norman Baker has asked Sussex Police to step up patrols to help put a stop to a spate of vehicle vandalism hitting the village over the last month.

The MP has received complaints from a number of local residents, involving theft and attempted theft of vehicles, snapped aerials, broken windscreen wipers and siphoned petrol. The damage appears to be occurring mostly in the middle of the night to cars parked either in the village car park or in nearby Waterloo Square.

Now Norman Baker is asking police to step up night patrols of the village, and if the problem is not eliminated soon, to consider the temporary provision of a CCTV system in the car park.

The MP says: "It is a sign of the times that even a quiet village like Alfriston is no longer immune from mindless vandalism. The police have been active and indeed I am aware that at least two individuals have been arrested. It seems however that more needs to be done, and I am pleased that the police agree with me that a greater police presence at key times should help deal with this inexcusable anti-social behaviour."
