2003 (and previous) press releases
Newhaven's MP, Norman Baker, today reopened the Mount Pleasant Post Office on Avis Road. Post Office Counters Ltd. had shut down the office in January this year.
Norman Baker cut the ribbon and met the new managers, Mr and Mrs Khoshfekr. The local shop in which the post office is located has recently been refurbished and redecorated in order to provide a high standard of service to local residents. The new Post Office will provide the same range of services as its predecessor.
Speaking about the new Post Office, Norman said:
"I am delighted to be able to finally re-open the Mount Pleasant Post Office. Local post offices play a fundamental role in local communities and I am extremely supportive of Mr and Mrs Khoshfekr's efforts.
Although today is about celebrating this success in Newhaven, I am well aware that the battle is not over. It is ridiculous that the government is going ahead with a series of Post Office closures, as well as making savings by means of reducing deliveries to households and by minimising the number of collections from post-boxes.
My constituents can rest assured that I will continue to do all I can to resist proposed closures and campaign for the further re-opening of other branches, for example in the Cliffe area of Lewes where a Post Office is badly needed."
