Commenting on President Putin's opening of a major international conference on climate change in Moscow today, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:
"This is a chance for President Putin to show his environmental credentials. If he signs up to Kyoto, it will come into force. If he doesn't, it will not, given the intransigence of President Bush.
"Russia must not miss this opportunity to show leadership and strengthen its links with Europe.
"Protection of the world's environment should not rest on whether or not Russia and the US want to play ball."
