2003 (and previous) press releases
The Lewes MP, Norman Baker, has spoken out in support of local clothing retailer, Gossypium, who have recently negotiated a contract to sell their organic yoga collection through high street giant, Marks & Spencer.
Gossypium, taking its name from the botanical name for cotton, is a Lewes based clothing brand that aims to be as ethical and environmentally sensitive as possible. The high quality cotton, grown by small-scale farmers in India as part of the Agrocelä Pure & Fair Cotton Project, is 100% organic, fairly traded and directly traceable back to the farmers.
The organic yoga collection is currently available from selected outlets including Harrods and the Lewes store, which stocks the entire collection. The full range of Gossypium products is also available online at www.gossypium.co.uk. The Marks & Spencer collection will be available in selected stores from January 2004.
Norman says:
"It is wonderful that an ethical, local business is so successful. I really hope that Gossypium's new range of clothing for Marks & Spencer's clothing range takes off and is welcomed by a public that is increasingly aware of the importance of supporting environmentally respectful, fair trade products. "
Norman is pictured here with Thomas Petit of Gossypium, holding a t-shirt specially designed for Gossypium by Julian Bell. It depicts Lewes High Street. “It’s the first time I have ever owned a t-shirt that pictures my house on it!” says Norman.
