Plans by Orange to erect a telecommunications mast along the Buckle by-pass in Seaford have been thrown out by a government inspector.
Local MP Norman Baker, who supported the strong local campaign to block the mast by writing a detailed letter of objection to the Inspector, welcomed the news.
He said: "This is very good news for Seaford. A mast in this location would have been a terrible eyesore and dominated the landscape in a wholly unwelcome way. It is generally very difficult to defeat mast applications, given government guidance in favour of them, so this represents a real victory for people power, and a good decision for Seaford.
"I would particularly like to congratulate Councillor Pat Bennett, who organised the successful campaign against this proposal. She has proved the worth of a good active local councillor."
In his decision letter, sent to the MP, the Inspector writes: "I consider that the installation would be unacceptable in relation to the residential environment immediately to the north of the site. It would be a very prominent feature... The bank top would give added prominence to a structure which, at 10m high, would be considerably taller than the adjacent trees and the small lampposts that light the residential streets and footpaths in the vicinity. Owing to its height, it would dominate the immediate locality and erode its pleasant residential character."
