2003 (and previous) press releases
Lewes MP Norman Baker has today welcomed the launch of the EDF Energy Trust - an independent charity funded by the energy provider EDF Energy which aims to assist people struggling to meet the cost of their energy bills. The trust will provide practical help to customers of London Energy, SWEB Energy, Seeboard Energy and Virgin Energy and also offers funding to agencies which seek to dispense advice and counselling on the debts that are sometimes incurred in meeting this.
Commenting on this Norman says:
"I warmly welcome this new charity, particularly at this time of year when we are experiencing the first bout of cold weather with its consequent rise in our energy consumption. Many of my constituents experience some trouble in meeting the cost of their energy bills and consequently the advice and practical help that this new charity offers should prove invaluable."
"However, this should not detract attention from the wider issue of the effect that poverty is having on many people at this time of year and the elderly and vulnerable in particular. It is about time that the government finally tackled the problem of the thousands of people who still die every year simply because they cannot afford to meet the costs of keeping their houses and themselves warm. In particular, much more needs to be done to encourage the introduction of energy efficiency measures so bills can be cut, and warmth kept up."
Customers can apply for an individual grant via an application form available on the trust's website at http://www.edfenergytrust.org.uk/, by emailing edfet@charisgrants.com, or by writing to the trust at EDF Energy Trust, PO Box 42, Peterborough, PE3 8XH.
