MP Welcomes Change of Heart From Boundary Commission

Lewes MP Norman Baker today congratulated the Boundary Commission on listening to the views of local people and amending their proposals for parliamentary constituency boundaries in East Sussex.

The Commission, which held a public inquiry last summer, has changed its original proposals and now agrees that Willingdon should remain in Eastbourne constituency, rather than be transferred to Lewes. It has also rejected the ideas put forward by the Tories - described by Norman Baker as "ludicrous and a crude attempt at gerrymandering" - to move Kingston ward from Lewes to Brighton Kemptown, and add places as far away as Nutley into the Lewes constituency.

Norman Baker says:

"This is a sensible set of proposals which neatly balances the need for some numerical equality across seats with the strongly expressed views of the community. In particular, it is right that Willingdon should remain with Eastbourne."
