Plans by East Sussex County Council to provide a pedestrian crossing at Cooksbridge have been warmly welcomed by Norman Baker, the MP for Lewes. After a local assessment, the council has deemed the site 'high priority,' and is set to install a central refuge island at a suitable point by the end of March 2005.
The local MP has, for a number of years, campaigned for increased safety measures to be implemented on the fast A road, particularly in light of the six road accidents that have taken place in the Cooksbridge area since 1999. There have been two reported casualties in the last five years, one serious involving a pedestrian.
Commenting on this, Norman said:
"I am absolutely delighted to hear that finally Cooksbridge is to receive the crossing point it so desperately needs.
"It is imperative that communities such as Cooksbridge, where primary school children are continually crossing the road, should be granted the proper amenities to ensure safe access for pedestrians."
