An attempt by a Tory backbencher to increase MPs’ mileage allowance – almost 50% more than that recommended by the ‘Review Body on Senior Salaries’ was defeated today after a blistering attack on the proposal by Lewes Lib Dem MP Norman Baker.
Norman who is the Lib Dem Shadow Environment Secretary, told the House that 57p per mile was excessive and 40p a much fairer figure. If MPs felt the need to plead poverty, he suggested that they switch to smaller, greener, cleaner cars.
He quoted the external report which says “We received no evidence to justify why MPs should be entitled to a more advantageous rate. We also consider that it is inconsistent to fix the bicycle and motorcycle allowances by reference to the approved IR rates but not also the car allowance. Furthermore it sets a bad environmental example by encouraging and rewarding car use.”
Speaking after the proposal to increase mileage was defeated by 193 to 118 votes, Norman said:
” This is a victory for common sense and for the environment, as well as for the public purse. MPs must not be given incentives to favour the car over public transport and I’m delighted that the House agreed with my arguments on this matter."
