Local MP welcomes energy benefits for the vulnerable

Lewes MP Norman Baker has welcomed moves by British Gas to extend the range of benefits available to the elderly and those most at risk from fuel poverty, including the capping of energy prices, offering free energy efficiency measures to the most vulnerable and extending the scheme to incorporate more households deemed at risk. Fuel poverty – the need to spend 10 per cent or more of household income to keep warm –currently applies to an estimated 5.3 million households in England and up to 50,000 deaths a year are attributed to it.

Commenting on the new measures, Norman says:

“I welcome this move by British Gas, particularly in view of the current climate of increasing fuel prices and the ongoing disgraceful situation where millions of people, including many in the Lewes constituency, struggle to meet their fuel bills over the winter, sometimes with tragic results.

“British Gas’s schemes offer a much-needed extension of facilities available to those most at risk, and provide a crucial lifeline for many who find it hard to meet their winter fuel bills.”
