Lewes MP and Lib Dem Environment Secretary Norman Baker has joined with the World Wildlife Fund in calling upon the UK Government to take the lead in international efforts to combat climate change. Norman has tabled a parliamentary motion, which has received the support of 95 of his fellow MPs, which warns that should global warming exceed the critical ‘tipping point’ of a 2% increase in average global Celsius temperatures relative to pre-industrial levels, the effects of climate change will be irreversible and extreme weather events such as the 2000 flooding in Lewes will become commonplace.
Norman joined with WWF at Westminster recently to launch their new ‘Climate Witness’ initiative, which seeks to highlight the danger posed to both humans and animals alike by climate change and to urge the UK government to press for future international strategies on climate change to recognise this crucial ‘tipping point’.
Speaking after the launch in Westminster, in which he attended a photoshoot complete with an Arctic ‘igloo’ and Huskie dogs, Norman commented:
“I am delighted to support this campaign which highlights quite how devastating an impact climate change is having upon people and habitats across the globe, from loss of habitat and species in the Arctic, to widespread flooding in Lewes.
“With the Prime Minister’s presidencies of the G8 and the EU in 2005, the UK is in a unique position to take the global lead on climate change. But we must take immediate and credible action at home first if we are to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change.”
