Ghost fleet must not be dismantled in Britain

The company responsible for bringing the ghost fleet to Britain, Able UK, has stated it is "highly likely" that the toxic ships will be dismantled on Teesside.

Commenting, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:

"The ships set sail when they were told not to and they refused to turn back when they were asked. Able UK were determined to receive them with the expectation that just this argument would be put forward when the initial fuss had died down.

"There has been clear indication from the Environment Agency, and from the courts, that the proper procedures had not been followed and that the necessary permissions were not in place. None of that has changed.

"The Government should stick to its promise and ensure these ships are sent back to the US as soon as weather permits. Ministers must reinforce the principle that waste should be disposed of as close as possible to the point of production.

"The ships were capable of sailing all the way across to Britain, but mysteriously are incapable of sailing back. It seems a very convenient argument."
