MPs Repeat Demand For Public Inquiry Over Cuckmere Valley Proposals

Local MPs Norman Baker (Lewes) and Nigel Waterson (Eastbourne) have repeated their demands for a full independent public inquiry into the Environment Agency's proposals to change radically the nature of the Cuckmere Estuary. They have also called for basic maintenance to be carried out to ensure the continuation of the status quo remains an option.

The call follows the announcement by the Agency that they intend to bring together the original two-phase project for the Cuckmere Estuary into one scheme.

Norman Baker says: "I welcome the fact that the project is now to be considered as a whole. That must make sense. But the format of a planning application is not adequate to allow the full environmental assessment that is needed for this special area. Nor does it allow the presentation in public of alternative views which can then be subject to cross-examination. It is for that reason that Nigel and I agree that only a proper independent Public Inquiry will suffice. The public have a right to be convinced that the final decision taken is the right one, and only an Inquiry will achieve that."

Nigel Waterson adds: " Any significant changes to this lovely coastline must have popular support. The only way to achieve this is to have a full Public Inquiry."

The two MPs have also called on the Environment Agency to maintain basic maintenance of the existing infrastructure so that the status quo is not ruled out by sheer disintegration, and remains an option pending the results of an Inquiry.
