Local MP, Norman Baker, has today called for responsibility for parking enforcement to be transferred from the police to local councils.
Following consistent complaints from local residents and community groups about the problems of inconsiderate and illegal parking, the local MP has called for East Sussex County and Wealden District councils to take over the reigns and adopt responsibility for the enforcement of parking regulations.
Commenting on the situation Norman says:
"I am only too aware of the problems experienced in Alfriston with regards illegal parking. The current scheme whereby parking regulations are enforced by the police just doesn't seem to be working. The number of patrols is quite simply insufficient to root out the persisting offenders that continue to flout the rules.
"What we need in Alfriston is for the District and County Councils to work closely together to develop a parking scheme that will better serve the community not only by reducing congestion and inconsiderate parking but by bringing additional revenue directly to a local level."
