Local MP Norman Baker is asking East Sussex County Council to erect signs on the approaches to Polegate level crossing, asking drivers held by the crossing to turn their engines off.
Norman says:
"We need to take action to reduce pollution at this point. The crossing is bang in the middle of the High Street where there are many pedestrians and businesses and because of the very frequent train services, the crossing barriers can come down eight times an hour, even outside the rush hours. In addition, because the barriers are manually operated, the length of time they are down per train is much more than is the case with automatic half-barriers.
"All this means it is very common for rows of cars to be sitting stationary either side of the crossing for some minutes, belching out fumes onto pedestrians, many of whom will equally be waiting at the crossing for the barriers to lift.
"That's why I am asking the County Council to erect signs asking drivers to cut their engines whilst waiting. As well as reducing pollution, it would reduce fuel costs for motorists too. Other crossings have such notices. Why can't Polegate?"
