Campaign groups have today called on the UK Government to take responsibility for the breaking up of British ships to prevent them being sent to developing countries.
The initiative is being launched by Hartlepool MP Peter Mandelson, who has recently supported the break up of the American 'ghost ships' by Teesside company, Able UK.
Responding, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:
"The concept that Britain must take responsibility for British waste is the right one. But this initiative must not overshadow the fact that America must also be expected to deal with its own dangerous waste.
"In developed countries, where the facilities are available, waste must be dealt with close to the point of production. The 'ghost ships' at Teesside should never have been allowed to cross the Atlantic.
"It's time for the Government to sign up to the 'polluter pays' principle."
