Consultation On Slaughter Must Look At All Methods

Commenting on the Government's draft response to the Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) report on the 'Welfare of Farmed Animals at Slaughter or Killing', published today, and the opening of a consultation on the issue, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Animal Welfare Spokesman, said:

"We have seen, over many years, unacceptable welfare standards for animals and we need to minimise suffering throughout animals' lives.

"The Government is right to consult on the issue of suffering at the point of slaughter and I would hope that as well as looking at religious slaughter, the Government will consider whether any improvements can be made to more conventional slaughter methods.

"We need an independent, professional analysis of how animal suffering can be minimised in all different slaughter methods."
