Lewes MP Norman Baker has lent his support to a campaign by The Nappy Alliance - 15 independent providers of modern, user-friendly and reusable cotton nappies - to raise awareness amongst mothers of the financial and environmental benefits of using real nappies. To highlight this and promote the campaign 'Real Nappy Week' (29th March - 4th April) Norman has signed a House of Commons motion designed to draw attention to these benefits and also voice concern at the Government's failure to address the important issues of environmental impact and cost to the NHS, raised by the heavy promotion of disposable nappies.
The MP has also tabled a number of written questions to Government Ministers to drive home the campaign.
Commenting on his support for the motion, Norman says:
"The Government is struggling to meet safe and environmentally-friendly standards of disposing of the ever-increasing mountain of waste. Nappies represent a significant part of this waste problem as around 3 billion disposable nappies end up on British landfill sites annually - that's eight million a day. This exacts a high price both environmentally and financially.
"I therefore welcome the efforts of the Nappy Alliance to tackle this problem by encouraging mothers to use real nappies made of material which allows them to be washed and reused, and was only too happy to sign a Commons motion recognising this.
"I hope now that this will finally make the Government sit up and take decisive action on this problem rather than let the country become buried under a pile of dirty laundry."
