Local MP Confirms C7 Safety Inspection At Southease

Lewes MP, Norman Baker has today welcomed East Sussex County Council's decision to arrange a safety inspection of the C7 road at Southease.

The local MP raised the issue with the council having been approached by Southease Parish Council and a number of local residents concerned about the frequency of accidents on the road. According to police records, the road at Southease has seen one fatal accident, two serious accidents and two slight crashes in the last three years alone.

East Sussex County Council has admitted that the road gives 'some cause for concern' but has not identified any one contributing factor as lying behind the accidents. The council has, nevertheless, taken the decision to order a test of the skid resistance of the road's new surface in view of its poor accident record.

Commenting on this Norman says:

"I am pleased that the council has decided to address this issue and arrange a site inspection to see whether there are any alterations to the road and signage that could be undertaken to improve the safety along that stretch of the C7.

"Although I am only too aware of the number of accidents caused by driver error, it is important that we make roads as safe as possible by ensuring that safety mechanisms such as appropriate speed limits, road surfaces and warning signs are all in place."

Norman Baker has over the years persuaded the council to introduce an number of safety measures to the road, including a 30mph limit at Rodmell, no overtaking sections and white "pull-in" arrows on the road.
