Seaford MP, Norman Baker, has today written to local councils to ask them to upgrade the street lighting in Croft Lane, and in the car park located behind the lane.
This request follows a number of complaints from local residents about a recent spate of vandalism and theft in Croft Lane, a narrow lane with no CCTV and only one street light. Increased lighting on the street could reduce the tendency of youths to loiter in the area and therefore act as a deterrent against anti-social behaviour, believes the MP.
This issue, only one example of Seaford's recent problems with anti-social behaviour, has contributed to the local police's decision to take a line of pro-active reinforcement in order to curb the trend. The local MP has therefore also written to the police to push for the consideration of Croft Lane under the new active policing regime in the area.
Commenting on the situation Norman says:
"I am very concerned about the distressing experiences of some of my constituents who live on Croft Lane who have been the victim of incidences of vandalism, theft and other anti-social behaviour.
"This kind of behaviour is very intimidating, as can be the tendency for people to loiter in the darker areas along the lane. I have therefore asked the County Council to consider erecting another street light and the District Council to look at the lighting in the car park behind. I am hopeful that improved lighting could deter people from loitering in the area and thereby reduce the number of incidences of criminal behaviour."
