Local MP Gets Results From Biggest Ever Survey of Polegate Businesses

The largest ever survey of Polegate traders, by local MP, Norman Baker, has highlighted concerns about levels of policing, paperwork and the means of business taxation.

Analysis of the response shows that:

Commenting on the results of the survey, Norman Baker said

"I am pleased with the level of response to these surveys, and by the comments, which will ensure that I can take further the concern of businesses in the town."

"It is worrying when so many local businesses feel as though the police presence is not enough. I will be meeting with representatives from Sussex Police later in the week for an update on local policing, and I will be sure to raise the concerns of Polegate businesses."

"In respect of business rates, there exists a situation where some small companies can pay 15% of their turnover while larger ones pay only 5% on their business rates," says the MP. "This clearly places an unfair burden on local traders. A business rates allowance, even of £1500, would ease this burden significantly and give smaller firms a chance to flourish."

"I also note the concerns about form filling. Although some paperwork is necessary, when it gets to the point where companies actually feel as though their profitability is at stake, it is going too far," the local MP says. "Clearly, the Government's predilection for red tape and bureaucracy needs to be rationalised. Small businesses should be able to concentrate on what they do best, not forced into filling out endless forms."
