Lewes MP, Norman Baker has today written to Lewes District Council asking them to take more steps to ensure that traders and residents in Lewes town centre are aware of the change in refuse collection dates after bank holiday weekends.
This move follows the mess left in Lewes after the long Easter weekend when uncertainty over refuse collection dates left the High Street awash with black bin bags, some of which became torn causing litter to be strewn up the High Street.
Commenting on this Norman says:
"I was disappointed to see the state of the High Street after the Easter weekend. Bin bags were festering on doorsteps and some had been torn leaving the litter to fly all over the street. Regrettably, this seems to happen after every Bank Holiday.
"I appreciate that the council try to make revised dates known but the sad fact is that their efforts are not working. I have therefore written to the council to ask that, in addition to publishing the revised bank holiday dates in the local press a week in advance, they should deliver the dates in leaflet form to businesses and homes on the High Street the week before bank holiday weekends.
"It saddens me to see the town centre looking as it did immediately after the Easter weekend, particularly when I am only too aware how committed the local council is to making sure that Lewes is a clean and tidy town."
