Local MP Supports New GM Law To Protect Organic Farmers

Lewes MP and Lib Dem Shadow Environment Secretary Norman Baker has today been congratulated by Friends of the Earth for his continued support of the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) Bill which seeks to introduce new laws to help prevent the contamination of non-GM and organic farms by GM crops. Norman wants the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to confirm that the Government will not block the Bill when it returns to Parliament on 14 May.

Commenting on this, Norman says:

"At present, this country's food chain is under threat of contamination from genetically modified organisms [including the crops of non-GM and organic farms]. This Bill would require contamination and liability rules to be in place before further planting of GM crops, and require these rules to be voted on by the House of Commons and devolved assemblies.

"This would then provide some protection to farmers who otherwise - should they find that their crops were contaminated by GM traits - would stand little chance of winning compensation from the GM industry who caused the pollution.

"Like many of my constituents I am concerned about the implications of growing GM crops on a commercial basis and I am therefore delighted to join with Friends of the Earth in their campaign. The Government must back the Bill when it returns to the House of Commons for debate on 14 May."
