More than 100 MPs of all parties have backed a campaign by Lewes MP Norman Baker for an independent inquiry into the Home Office's dealings with the animal experimentation companies Imutran and Huntingdon Life Sciences.
Commenting on his motion Norman says:
"Animal testing is unacceptable where it is unnecessarily cruel or used for non-essential purposes. In the case of Huntingdon Life Sciences, there is some evidence that the Home Office - as the responsible Government Department - has been failing to effectively regulate this.
"My motion draws attention to this and calls upon the Government to take immediate action to tighten up the enforcement of existing legislation and agree to an independent inquiry into the "Diaries of Despair", a report produced by Uncaged Campaigns.
"Clearly, the level of support that the motion has received from my fellow MP's reflects the amount of popular concern about this issue. The Government now must stop trying to sweep this embarrassing matter under the carpet."

EDM 685 UNCAGED CAMPAIGNS
That this House welcomes the historic legal victory achieved by Uncaged Campaigns allowing publication, in the public interest, of documents and a report describing Imutran/Novartis primate xenotransplantation research programme at Huntingdon Life Sciences; notes that the evidence contained within these documents, together with the fact of Uncaged Campaigns' victory, raises profound questions about severe animal suffering and the adequacy of the Home Office's enforcement of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and associated regulations; and calls upon the Government to establish an independent inquiry to investigate fully the conduct of the Home Office, Imutran and Huntingdon Life Sciences in relation to this programme of research.
