Speaking immediately after the throwing of material from the public gallery at the Prime Minister, Lib Dem MP Norman Baker, who was in the chamber at the time, said:
"It is very worrying that, despite the erection of a security screen, an individual is still able to be in a position to throw something at the Prime Minister and hit him. There are clearly questions to be asked about how this could have happened.
"The mauve powder which was thrown clearly hit the PM on the back - it appears at this early stage to be harmless, but it could have been anthrax.
"I fear that the inevitable consequence of this event will be to restrict even further public access to the Chamber and to make it even less possible for the PM and leading Cabinet members to lead normal lives and meet ordinary members of the public.
"This is a sad day for democracy."
