Responding to the Environment Agency's call today for universal water metering as a measure to curb demand, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:
"Liberal Democrats have long advocated universal water metering as a long term solution that will curb the increasing demand for water.
"What Ministers have failed to make clear is that metered water supplies can benefit both the environment and the wallet. Metering would provide an incentive to families to conserve water as they will only pay for what they use.
"The Government is taking a piecemeal approach to extending metering when it should have a clear strategy in place.
"Universal metering at fair prices is a better deal for the public and the environment."
