Local MP Celebrates Lewes's New Status As Fair Trade Town


Lewes MP Norman Baker has today revealed that Lewes has been accepted as the UK’s 59th Fairtrade Town. 

This follows the successful application of Fairtrade Lewes, of which Norman is a patron, to the national Fairtrade Foundation which regulates the Fairtrade mark. This mark is the only independent consumer label that guarantees a better deal for producers in developing countries.

In order to become a Fair Trade Town, the steering group has ensured that:

"I am delighted that our application has been accepted by the Fairtrade Foundation and that Lewes is now officially a Fair Trade Town.The Lewes Fairtrade Steering Group has worked very hard to raise awareness of Trade Justice and promote Fair Trade produce within the town and I am pleased that their dedication has been rewarded.

“Ensuring a better deal for producers in the developing world is an essential part of sustainable development and I am happy to support the Fairtrade movement within my constituency in any way that I can.”
