Abandoned Car Mountain Doubles In Size Across The North


The numbers of cars abandoned has more than doubled across the North in the last two years.

Every region in the country has seen a rise in dumped vehicles but the North East, Yorkshire and the North West have all seen the rate increase by more than 100% since 2000.

The figures, uncovered by Norman Baker MP, through Parliamentary questions, show that across the country the problem of abandoned cars has now reached such levels that they would fill all six lanes of the M25 if placed bumper to bumper.

Commenting on the figures, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:

"Far from the Government getting on top of the abandoned car mountain, it is getting ever higher.

"This is a direct consequence of the absurd decision to make the final owner of the car foot the bill for its disposal, rather than the manufacturer as is standard practice throughout the EU.

"Every car burnt out in a field, sitting in a quarry or cluttering up a housing estate has the words government incompetence written all over it."
