Local MP Calls For Withdrawal Of Disney Pyjamas

Lewes MP and Lib Dem Shadow Environment Secretary Norman Baker MP has called on the government to take tougher action over the use of toxins in children's clothing. A Greenpeace investigation has revealed that pyjamas sold in Disney's UK stores contain harmful levels of toxic chemicals such as nonylphenol, phthalates and formaldehyde - chemicals which can harm human DNA, and cause serious damage to the liver, kidney and testicles. Norman has tabled a Commons motion drawing attention to the issue and calling upon the Government to support current EU efforts to change European legislation so that national Governments will be required to substitute toxic chemicals with safer alternatives.

Commenting on his motion, Norman says:

"I have concerns about the safety of phthalates in general, but particularly in the case where the products are aimed at children. Disney is acting within the law, but in my view by selling these poisoned apples to children, the Disney Corporation have sullied their own snow white image.

"The Government must support efforts being made at European level to tackle the lax Mickey Mouse legislation which currently governs chemicals. In the meantime, Disney should play safe and withdraw these pyjamas."
