Commenting on the detention at the weekend by the Immigration Service of eight Chinese nationals as they entered Newhaven, the town's MP Norman Baker said:
"It is reassuring that the Immigration Service has on this occasion identified this particular incident of people-smuggling which suggests that the authorities are finally recognising what I have long said - that Newhaven is a tempting entry route for those who wish to smuggle people, drugs, guns, alcohol or anything else.
"It remains the case however, that the security arrangements at Newhaven do not compare well with those of ports like Dover and further work needs to be done. In particular I would like to see the creation of one integrated border police force, bringing together the resources of Customs, the Immigration Service, Special Branch and our local councils.
"Newhaven needs to be a safe and secure port, not just in the interests of local people but in the interests of those poor individuals who suffer at the hands of people traffickers, often seriously as in this case."
