Newhaven MP Norman Baker has demanded that the French owners of Transmanche ferry, who operate the traditional boats between Newhaven and Dieppe, make an urgent and clear statement into the circumstances which led to the MV Dieppe crashing into the harbour at Dieppe on Saturday. According to The Sun this morning, the crash was caused by a drunk matelot, three times over the limit, and left a 2 foot hole in the hull.
Norman says:
"This is a very worrying incident. We have a right to expect that those in charge of public transport vehicles - whether it's trains, buses or boats - are qualified, well trained and above all sober. This incident could have been far worse.
"The French authorities need to establish very clearly what happened. If this matelot was indeed drunk, then he should be charged with endangering lives. And the ferry operation needs to review its procedures to find out how this could have happened and to stop it happening again.
"The Newhaven-Dieppe line is a vital link for my constituency and an important economic asset. Incidents like this only harm the reputation of the line."
