Lewes MP and Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary Norman Baker has today written to Southern Water's Managing Director Stuart Derwent to ask the company to withdraw plans for a mobile phone mast to be sited at their Ham Lane site, close to Priory School
Commenting on this Norman says:
"It is a matter of personal choice whether to use a mobile phone or not, and whether to allow your child to use a phone or not. If a base station is sited so close to the school, families will have no choice about whether or not their children are exposed to potentially harmful rays of non-ionising radiation
"The long-term health risks associated with mobile phone base stations are not yet clear. Until we can be sure there are no health risks involved in these masts we should err on the side of caution. Government guidelines suggest that operators should apply the precautionary principle when siting masts and try to avoid schools and hospitals.
"I hope therefore that Southern Water will think again."
