Local MP Takes The Lead On Responsible Dog Ownership

Lewes MP Norman Baker has given his support to a campaign to reduce the number of dogs which go missing in London when owners fail to keep their pet on a lead. New figures, released by the animal welfare charity Battersea Dogs Home, reveal that almost 3,400 dogs have been reported lost in London since January 2004, of which 1,270 did not have a lead or collar. Norman joined with fellow MPs and celebrity Tamara Beckwith at the Westminster launch of the charity's new 'Love to Lead' campaign which aims to raise owner awareness of the issue and publicise a new online resource offering guidance to dog lovers in London.

Speaking at the launch, Norman said:

"I'm very happy to support Battersea Dogs Home in their campaign to encourage more responsible dog ownership. Too much distress is currently experienced by both dogs and their owners simply because the latter neglect to put a lead on their pet when they take them outside. Dogs are instinctive creatures and can easily run off if something gets their attention - this can often result in a missing pet or even worse.

"Owners not only have a duty of care but - in some areas - are legally bound to make sure that when they take their pet out in public they should be kept on a lead. Failing to do that in some places could incur a hefty fine."

"It is therefore important that dog owners realise their responsibility to keep their dog safe by making sure that when they take their pet out in public places the lead remains in place."
