Commenting ahead of the announcement by OFWAT on how much water bills are set to rise over the next five years, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:
"The water companies have asked for a huge, above-inflation rise in bills which will hit many families hard. Investment is needed to deliver good environmental performance, but there is an alternative that the Government is missing.
"The Government and water companies are not making real efforts to reduce water consumption amongst consumers and businesses, in order that expensive measures to provide extra water are not required.
"John Prescott's concentrated house building plans in the south east will only fuel the problem of scarcity, leading to costly infrastructure works.
"Consumers should be switching to metered rates and expensive water suppliers should be reducing the cost of metered water. The Government must accept that universal water metering can benefit everyone."
