Lewes MP, Norman Baker, has today demanded that the Highways Agency implements 24 hour 'round the clock' road works on the A27.
The road works, which have been responsible for severe delays along the road over the past two weeks, are due to continue until the end of September.
The Highways Agency, responsible for overseeing the works, have not been ensuring an 'around the clock' working schedule in past weeks as their contractors have claimed that they have no way of disposing of extracted materials after 10:00pm each evening.
Commenting on this Norman says:
"It is quite simply unacceptable that road works on a key arterial route such as the A27 do not continue overnight in order to reduce the number of weeks when the road is affected.
"Although it is school holidays, this is still a busy time of year along the South Coast with people travelling on holiday and local farmers trying to transport their harvests to ports and other parts of the country.
"I have spoken to the Highways Authority about this matter and I do not, quite frankly, consider the issues of disposing of extracted materials to be a valid reason for not working overnight. This issue should have been considered weeks ago and a solution found before the works began."
