Lewes MP, Norman Baker, has today welcomed the decision made by Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Tony McNulty, to abandon plans for a full manually controlled barrier at Beddingham Level Crossing.
The crossing, set to be replaced by a bridge in the near future as part of the Southerham to Beddingham Improvement Scheme, will be improved with interim safety measures before construction of the bridge commences.
Commenting on this Norman says:
"I welcome the fact the Department of Transport has taken the decision to abandon plans for a full barrier at the crossing.
"A full barrier would have meant that the road would have been closed for up to 36 minutes per hour, causing gridlock in the area. This is why I have argued against a full barrier from the outset."
