Lewes MP, Norman Baker, has today reiterated his concerns about insufficient security at Newhaven Port following the discovery of five people in a trailer who had used the port to illegally enter the country.
Employees of a local factory discovered the five stowaways early last Saturday morning when they started unloading the delivery trailer at the beginning of the day. Three of the immigrants managed to escape but two were detained and remain in custody.
The employees noted that, although the usual carbon dioxide checks for trailers were carried out, the high level of carbon dioxide detected was ignored and the vehicle left to continue its journey. High levels of carbon dioxide inside a trailer often indicates the presences of humans or other living beings.
Commenting on this Norman says:
"This incident confirms that Newhaven has been identified as a desirable port for those people who wish to use it illegally for both people smuggling and the smuggling of other goods.
"It also reinforces the pressing need at Newhaven for more investment from central government so that security at the port can be upgraded to levels enjoyed at larger ports such as Dover."
