Local MP Congratulates Lewes District Council On Home Energy Conservation Gains

Lewes MP and Lib Dem Shadow Environment Secretary, Norman Baker has welcomed new figures, which show that people in Lewes District lead all other Sussex districts in making progress on home energy conservation. The figures, published by Defra, show that Lewes comes ahead of all other local authority districts in both East and West Sussex - with a 15% improvement in domestic energy efficiency between 1996 and 2003.

Commenting on this, Norman says:

"I am delighted that Lewes District Council has made excellent progress in cutting down on the amount of energy that people use in their homes.

"Climate change has been described by the Government's own Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir David King, as 'the greatest threat' facing the planet and our need to cut the emission levels of Carbon Dioxide which are feeding this has never been more pressing. Since over a quarter of this carbon is produced to power and heat our homes it is imperative that we take more action in our homes to improve energy efficiency.

"Improving the energy efficiency of the home not only helps save the environment, but it also saves your pocket - for an average household this can save at least £100 every year on fuel bills. As the example set by my constituents shows - It pays to be green!"
