Local MP Calls For Speed Limit On A275

Lewes MP Norman Baker says speed limits should be cut further on the A275, and has identified two locations for action.

The changes he is asking for are:

Norman says:

"I have long campaigned for a safer A275, and called for speed reductions on this busy road. I welcome the steps the County Council has taken to bring this about, but there are I think two locations where a further change is required.

"At Offham, you have a very bendy road with poor visibility, and a degree of cross traffic, including horses. Accidents are still occurring on this stretch of road, which look to me to be speed-related as control is lost on the bends.

"At Chailey, we now have a lower speed through South Chailey as far as Ibstock's, and one past the primary school, but the national maximum applies on the long straight stretch in between. There are of course properties along this stretch, including the village shop. As cars generally park in the long lay-by opposite the shop, this means people have to cross the road facing traffic at speed from both directions. It is not a safe arrangement, but would be safer if the limit were reduced to 50. Psychologically, replacing the black diagonal band with a red speed limit circle changes the climate for drivers."
