Responding to Home Office figures published today which reveal that the number of tests on animals has increased to 2.8 million, a rise of 2%, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:
"Here we have yet another broken Labour promise. Many people voted for them in 1997 because they believed Tony Blair when he said he would reduce the number of animal experiments. Instead they are going up. "We should be seeing far more investment in alternatives such as cell culture and computer modelling which are both more humane and more reliable."
