Local MP Calls On Post Office To Minimise Temporary Closures

Lewes MP, Norman Baker has today expressed serious concerns about the temporary closures of two post offices, one in Ringmer and the other on Norton Road in Newhaven.

Both premises will be temporarily closed, from 13th October and 17th November respectively, due to the resignations of their respective subpostmasters. The Newhaven branch will also face the loss of its premises on Norton Road.

Commenting on this Norman says:

"I am extremely disappointed that, once again, the Post Office is having to temporarily close branches without any indication of how long these closures will last or any interim contingency plans.

"The last time we faced this situation in Ringmer, the temporary closure dragged on for some time, causing considerable inconvenience and difficulty to local residents. Once again, local people are faced with the option of travelling to either Laughton, which is virtually impossible without private transport, or Lewes, where the queues sometimes stretch out of the Post Office onto the pavement.

"I am therefore calling on the Post Office to do all they can to locate new subpostmasters and, in the case of Newhaven, new premises as soon as possible. I certainly want to avoid another saga, similar to the one carrying on in Lewes, where a replacement Post Office for the Cliffe was promised years ago, and we are all still waiting."
